Новость на Казах-зерно:Iraq has disclosed its intentions to augment the import of agricultural products from India in a bid to branch out the trade basket and also strengthen the business ties with India. In the same move, the western Asian country has announced its plans to buy 100,000 tonnes of rice from India.

Iraq is looking to increase import of wheat, sugar and other agricultural products from India, as expressed by the Iraq's Trade Minister Mr Kheer Allah Hassan Babkr.

On the sidelines of a business meeting, Mr Babkr, said, “We are buying 100,000 tonnes of rice from India. Within a few weeks, the shipment will reach Iraq. Our annual requirement of rice is 1.2 million tonnes. We produce only 200,000 tonnes, the rest has to be imported. We mainly import rice from countries like Vietnam, Thailand and Brazil. Now we are trying to depend on Indian rice.”

Mr Babkr is the part of a business delegation accompanying Deputy Prime Minister Mr Rowsch N. Shaways, who is currently on a visit to India.

Iraq was also keen to import wheat, sugar and edible oil from India.

During the last five years, the two-way trade between India-Iraq almost doubled. The bilateral trade between the two countries increased to USD 9.7 billion in 2010-11 as opposed to USD 5.7 billion in 2006-07.
